Geely Emgrand L EM-i Announced.
Geely’s Australian range has grown quickly, but so far there has been a fairly obvious theme: SUVs and an electric hatchback.
The Emgrand L EM-i changes that.
Due to arrive in Australia in the first half of 2027, the Emgrand brings Geely’s plug-in hybrid technology to a sleek five-seat sedan. And in a market where seemingly everything is turning into an SUV, there’s something rather refreshing about that.
A Sedan in a Sea of SUVs
The Emgrand L EM-i has a long, clean profile, a distinctive front grille and the proportions of a proper passenger sedan.
But this isn’t simply about making something that looks good sitting in the driveway. There’s useful everyday space behind that shape too, including a generous 528-litre boot.
For anyone who still prefers the lower driving position and easy-going feel of a sedan but doesn’t want to give up practicality, the Emgrand is already starting to make an interesting case for itself.
Electric Around Town, Petrol-Hybrid When You Need It
The really interesting part sits underneath.
The Emgrand L EM-i combines an 18.4kWh battery with Geely’s EM-i plug-in hybrid system, with more than 80km of electric driving range1 and over 1,000km of combined range1 under WLTP testing.
That could make a lot of sense in everyday use. Charge at home and there’s enough quoted EV range to potentially cover plenty of normal commuting and running around without relying on the petrol engine. When the weekend drive becomes considerably longer than planned, the hybrid system is still there to keep you moving.
It’s the sort of combination we can see working particularly well for Melbourne driving.
And It Certainly Doesn’t Sound Slow
Efficiency is only part of the story.
The figures currently being shown for Australia are 185kW and 260Nm, with 0–100km/h quoted at 6.96 seconds.*
That’s reasonably serious performance for a spacious plug-in hybrid sedan. So while the Emgrand L EM-i is clearly designed around efficiency and everyday usability, it doesn’t look as though you’ll need to sacrifice much when you put your foot down either.
Inside Is Where Things Get Really Interesting
The cabin takes a similarly clean approach, with a large central display, an open centre console and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for everyday connectivity.
But we’ve also been looking at the Emgrand already on the road overseas — and that’s where things get particularly interesting.
Overseas models feature perforated leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof, giving the Emgrand a genuinely premium feel inside.
Those features aren’t confirmed for Australia, but we’re certainly hoping they make the trip.
What We Hope Makes the Trip to Australia
There’s plenty happening on the safety side too.
Overseas Emgrand L models feature L2 driver assistance, Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), pre-collision braking with pedestrian and two-wheeler detection, and a 540-degree camera system.
We’re certainly hoping plenty of that equipment makes the trip to Australia. Add it to the performance, electric range and a genuinely premium-looking cabin, and the Emgrand starts to feel like much more than simply another efficient plug-in hybrid.
And if our cars arrive with the panoramic roof and that level of safety technology, we’ll happily volunteer for the first long drive.
Five Colours Are Coming Our Way
The Emgrand L EM-i will be available in Alpine White, Cloudveil Silver, Polar Black, Volcanic Grey and Glacier Blue.
Glacier Blue is already doing a pretty convincing job in the early imagery, although the Emgrand’s shape looks like it should work particularly well in some of the darker colours too.
Final Australian pricing and the complete variant and equipment breakdown are still to come, so there’s going to be plenty more to discover before the first cars reach showrooms.
Pre-Orders Are Now Open
For a limited period, customers placing an eligible order for a new Emgrand L EM-i between 18 and 30 September 2026 can receive a 7kW single-phase AC home wall charger (hardware only) plus complimentary premium exterior paint valued up to $600, subject to the full offer terms and conditions.
Installation, electrical works and other charger-related installation costs are not included.
With Australian arrival planned for the first half of 2027, we’re genuinely interested to see where the Emgrand L EM-i lands.
More than 80km of quoted electric range1, over 1,000km of combined range1, 185kW, a spacious sedan body and the possibility of some very nice equipment if Australia follows the lead of overseas models — there is quite a bit here to look forward to.
And in a market where almost everything seems to be becoming an SUV, we’re rather glad somebody remembered the sedan.
