The All-New Mitsubishi Pajero: What We Now Know for Australia

The first time we wrote about the all-new Pajero, Mitsubishi had only just pulled the covers off it. Now we know quite a bit more — including the Australian range, the equipment, the 4WD technology and some of the creature comforts waiting inside.

And there’s plenty here that feels very Pajero.

The name may have been away from Australian showrooms for a few years, but Mitsubishi hasn’t brought it back simply to trade on nostalgia. The new Pajero is due to arrive in Australia in December 2026, with a four-model line-up spanning five- and seven-seat configurations.

Four Pajeros to Choose From

Australian buyers will be able to choose from GLS 5, GLS 7, Exceed and GSR.

The GLS 5 starts things off with five seats, 18-inch black alloy wheels, black fabric trim and twin 12.3-inch displays. Importantly, the core mechanical package isn’t reserved for the expensive end of the range: the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, Super Select II 4WD system, seven terrain modes and Digital See-Through Bonnet camera are all part of the GLS package.

Need the extra seats? The GLS 7 adds a third row, along with third-row curtain airbags and USB-C power.

Move into the Exceed and things become noticeably more luxurious, with 20-inch machined alloy wheels, leather trim, power-adjustable seating, heated front and rear seats, pull-up rear window shades, a cooling console box and larger 14.3-inch driver and infotainment displays. There’s also a 12-speaker Yamaha audio system with subwoofer — which should make the long drive home a little more enjoyable, regardless of who gets control of the playlist.

At the top sits the GSR, adding 20-inch dark grey alloys, a two-tone panoramic roof and sunroof, two-tone leather interior, ventilated front seats, driver-seat/mirror/steering-wheel memory, Adaptive Driving Beam and a smart rear-view mirror.

Still Very Much a 4WD

For all the extra screens and nicer seats, Mitsubishi clearly hasn’t forgotten what the Pajero badge is supposed to mean.

The new model uses a ladder-frame chassis and a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel paired with an eight-speed automatic. Mitsubishi’s global technical information quotes 480Nm of torque, while Australian-market information confirms 3.5-tonne braked towing, Super Select II 4WD and seven terrain modes.

That combination matters because plenty of Pajeros have always had two jobs. They need to be comfortable enough for school runs, commuting and family holidays, but still capable when the bitumen disappears or there’s a caravan hanging off the back.

There’s even a Digital See-Through Bonnet camera designed to give the driver a view of the terrain immediately in front of the vehicle. It’s the sort of technology that sounds slightly futuristic until you’re trying to place a wheel over something you can’t actually see from the driver’s seat.

A Cabin That Has Moved With the Times

This is probably where returning Pajero owners will notice the biggest change.

Depending on grade, the new Pajero uses either twin 12.3-inch displays or a pair of expansive 14.3-inch screens integrated across the dashboard. Mitsubishi has also brought some Pajero history into the digital age with an off-road display that can show information such as pitch and roll angles, altitude and compass bearing.

So yes, there are considerably more pixels than there were in the Pajeros many of us remember.

But the useful stuff hasn’t been forgotten. Exceed and GSR add features aimed squarely at making long trips easier, including heated seating, while GSR adds ventilated front seats and memory settings for the driver’s seat, mirrors and steering wheel.

Comfort for the Long Way Around

The seven-seat models give families the option of carrying the extra passengers when needed, then folding things away when luggage, camping gear or the inevitable over-packed weekend away takes priority.

The new Pajero is clearly moving further upmarket, particularly in Exceed and GSR form, but it hasn’t suddenly become too precious to get dirty.

Mitsubishi says the vehicle has been tested in Australian conditions, and the Australian model combines its 4WD hardware with a broader range of comfort and technology than previous generations.

A Little More Personalisation

There’s also a range of Mitsubishi Genuine Accessories developed for Pajero and Australian conditions. That should make it easier for owners to tailor one towards touring, towing or simply the way they plan to use it.

And judging by the accessorised version Mitsubishi has already shown, we suspect quite a few owners will have a shopping list ready before their Pajero has even reached the driveway.

Pre-Orders Are Open

The other big update since our first Pajero story is that Australian pre-orders are now open.

Eligible customers who pre-order a new and unregistered NU Pajero GLS, Exceed or GSR through an authorised Mitsubishi Motors dealership by 15 December 2026 can receive the first three scheduled services complimentary, valued at up to $1,497, plus a $1,000 Genuine Mitsubishi Motors Accessory Pack, subject to the full offer terms and conditions.

With the all-new Pajero due to arrive in December, we’re looking forward to seeing one in the metal — and, perhaps more importantly, seeing what Australian Pajero owners make of it.

It’s a very different vehicle from the Pajeros that came before it. But underneath all the new technology and extra comfort, the idea still feels familiar: a proper family 4WD that’s supposed to be just as useful on Monday morning as it is when the road turns to dirt on Saturday.
